A solo exhibition dedicated to this extraordinary photographer, with a focus on her female subjects, Eve Arnold was the first female member of Magnum and excelled in what was at the time a predominantly male profession. Arnold's images of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits (1961) are perhaps her most famous and though she photographed many celebrities throughout her career, the exhibition highlighted her social justice work, which was Arnold’s true passion. Breaking taboos and unjust social constructs, Arnold photographed the black communities in Harlem and keenly followed the Civil Rights Movement, resulting in powerful photographic documentation that would define recent American history. Her series of women giving birth in the 1950s were considered indecent when first exhibited. Travel characterized much of Arnold's work and she produced a film in 1971, Women Behind the Veil, focusing on Arabian harems. The exhibition charts the life and achievements of Arnold in the context of American and world history from 1950 to her death in 2012.
